Solutions to Significant Problems
WINDOWS XP
Q: How do I remove the large blank space in Add/Remove Programs screen in the Control Panel?
A: This is caused by a corrupted DisplayIcon registry entry. Look at the entries in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
The value for DisplayIcon should be a path to an icon file, plus an optional comma-followed-by-a-number. If the optional number is -1, you'll get the big blank. Just search through the key mentioned above for "DisplayIcon", checking the value of each. If you find a ",-1" in any of them, remove the comma and the -1 and you'll be OK.

Q: How do I re-create the Show Desktop Icon on Quick Launch toolbar?
A: To re-create the Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch toolbar, follow these steps:
1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to create a file with the following lines:
  [Shell]
  Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3
  [Taskbar]
  Command=ToggleDesktop
2. Save the new file as a file named Show Desktop.scf in the Windows\System or Winnt\System32 folder. Note that Notepad may automatically append a .txt extension to the file name. Remove this extension if Notepad adds it. These steps do not work if the file is named Show Desktop.scf.txt.
3. Quit Notepad.
4. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the Show Desktop .scf file, and then click Create Shortcut.
5. Copy the new shortcut to the appropriate folder. In Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, copy the shortcut to this folder: Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch In Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000, copy the shortcut to this folder: Winnt\System32 In Microsoft Windows XP, copy the shortcut to the following folder: WINDOWS\System32\Config\Systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
6. Rename the shortcut to Desktop.
The Show Desktop icon automatically appears on the Quick Launch toolbar.

Q: How do I change the listening port for Remote Desktop?
A: In the Registry Editor, search for every occurrence of the subkey WinStations. Within that subkey, access the RDPTcp\PortNumber subkey. Edit, Modify and then click Decimal. Change from the default port 3389 to your desired port. Continue searching for more occurrences of WinStations and make the same change. Remember to allow remote desktop connections in Control Panel and to allow this port number to penetrate the Windows XP SP2 firewall. Finally, make any changes in your router to direct this port to this IP address.

Q: My system starts up to the Welcome screen. It lists 2 accounts and I don't know the password for either account. However, I do know the password for the administrator account but that doesn't show at the Welcome screen. How can I login?
A: The Welcome screen is one of my least favorite aspects of Windows XP. In order to receive a "standard login" screen, press Ctrl-Alt-Del (3 finger DOS salute) TWO (2) times at the Welcome screen. Then you can enter the administrator login name and password and access your system. Once you have entered your system as an administrator, go to Control Panel - User Accounts - Advanced and click on Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Q: I have a Windows XP system that will NOT connect to the Internet. I can't even get it to receive a TCP/IP address from a DHCP server. All other aspects of the system are fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my NIC driver, I have installed a new NIC. None of this has corrected the problem, please help.
A: This is one of the most difficult problems to solve. I have seen this on a couple of Windows XP systems and several Windows 98 systems. The problem is due to a corrupted Winsock or TCP/IP protocol stack. To fix the problem requires editing the Windows Registry. This involves significant risk to your system and should only be undertaken by those experienced and comfortable with registry hacks. In the registry, delete the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
Reboot your system. Then, go to network connections, right click the icon for your network connection and select properties. Click Install, Protocol, Add, Have Disk, "\windows\inf", click on OK. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on OK. Once the process is complete, reboot. Your TCP/IP connections should be restored along with your internet access.

Q: I have a Windows XP system that boots up fine. When I click on a user to login, the desktop appears briefly and then it reverts back to the Welcome/Login screen. What can I do?
A: This is a tricky problem that I have seen on only a couple of systems. This can happen after running Ad-Aware when it has found a malicious piece of software that has attached itself to the userinit.exe file. Go to a running Windows XP system and make a copy of c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe onto a floppy disk. Boot up your Windows XP system with the Windows XP CD and go to the recovery console (type 'R' when prompted to do so). Login as the administrator and put the floppy in your floppy drive. Copy a:\userinit.exe to c:\windows\system32 and then exit the recovery console. You should be able to login normally now.

Q: When users try to move messages that contain attachments from a Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox to their Microsoft Outlook Personal Storage (PST) file, or when they try to move messages that contain attachments from a PST file to an Exchange Server mailbox, they may receive an error message similar to the following:
"Can't move the items. The item could not be moved. It was either already moved, or deleted, or access was denied." How do they get around this problem?

A: This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
* Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2.1x for Microsoft Exchange (NAVMSE) is installed on the Exchange Server. -and-
